This self-watering wick cord is a rope in 4 mm (0.16 in), 5 mm (0.2 in) and 6 mm (0.24 in) outer diameters, used to carry water from a container into potted soil. It is a simple DIY part for building an automatic watering setup, with the rope acting as the wick between the water and the plant.
Self-watering wick cords suit people who grow houseplants or container plants and want a simple, low-cost way to keep soil moist. Hobby gardeners who enjoy DIY projects can build their own setup from a bottle or bucket.
Pick a diameter from the 4 mm (0.16 in), 5 mm (0.2 in) or 6 mm (0.24 in) options that suits the water container and pot you plan to use. Because drip volume depends on the container size, choose a container that holds enough water for the plant.
Choose a rope length that reaches from your water container to the soil in the pot, and leave enough slack to adjust its position around crowded plants.
How soon does the rope start dripping?
Soaking the rope fully in water before use lets it drip right away. Without soaking, it can take within 15 minutes, depending on the length of rope you cut off.
Can the rope be reused?
The rope can be washed and used repeatedly.
What diameters are available?
Outer diameters are 4 mm (0.16 in), 5 mm (0.2 in) and 6 mm (0.16–0.24 in).
Does the drip rate change?
Drip volume and timing are set by the water container size you choose.
